New Zealand - Franz Joseph (Jan 17-18)

Franz Joseph Day 1 (Jan 17)
We woke up early in Hanmer Springs to start the drive down to Franz Joseph. The drive took pretty much all day, with a lot of sleeping on the bus! We stopped at Christchurch on the way through to pick up 2 new people for the tour. Christchurch is basically nothing since there was a devastating earthquake there 2 years ago. The main street was all temporary storage containers made into stores and coffee shops which was really cool but also sad that they haven't rebuilt even after 2 years. We arrived at our hotel and had dinner there which we had pre-ordered. Everyone was really tired and wanted an early night so we headed to bed early and I read my book for about an hour before going to sleep.

Franz Joseph Day 2 (Jan 18)
Another day we got to sleep in a little bit! We woke up and had breakfast and then got picked up to go to the glaciers! My original plan was to do a tour that hiked up from the ground and just got to the base of the glacier but last minute Jodi and I decided to switched to the option where a helicopter took us up to the middle of the glacier and then we got to hike around on it for 2 and a half hours! It was amazing, so many little caves and crevices in the glacier that we got to crawl around in. When we were done on the glacier we headed back down to regular ground in the helicopter and saw more amazing views.

Then we headed back to the hotel and had an all you can eat pizza night and a few drinks with the group before bed!
